Feeling down? Need a little music to provide a helping hand? This blog aims to become a signpost to new music. New albums for you and me. Not new in the sense that they were just released (although that might be the case) but new because you have never heard of it before. If you have, I apologize. I will never post albums from the same genre twice in a row, variety is the spice of life people! So sit back, relax, and enjoy wonderful music made by artists that deserve our attention.

Shakey Graves "Roll the Bones"
"Roll the Bones" is an album by Shakey Graves, released in 2011. I stumbled upon a YouTube video of one of his performances and was impressed with his singing ability and fingerpicking skills. This folk album is successful because of its simplicity. The instrumentation consists mostly of guitar, vocals, and other accompanying instruments here and there such as harmonica which makes the album feel very personal. The album itself also sounds a little lo-fi which would say adds to its overall tone. My favorite songs on the album are "Roll the Bones" and "Im on Fire". The album is available on here on Bandcamp with an option to name your price and I suggest you download this album now and support the artist if you like!

"Live at the Quick" by Bela Fleck and the Flecktones
Here's a live album by Bela Fleck and the Flecktones that was
released in 2002 under Columbia records. For those of you who don't
know, the group consists of innovative musicians that try to push beyond
the limitations of their instruments. Bela Fleck is the banjo player in
the group who can be seen switching instruments throughout a
performance in an attempt to make every song sound fresh. I chose to
share this album with you all because it's a good representation of the
band in a live setting and these musicians know how to play. I think
it's important that a band can play a solid live show because it seems
that nowadays more and more bands aren't giving fans the type of energy
and solid playing that they expect at a show. I urge everyone to go see
Bela live if you ever have a chance!

"Impossible Spaces" by Sandro Perri
-->
Enjoy !
Alex
Here’s an album I’m really excited to show everyone. “Impossible
Spaces” is the creation of Sandro Perri, released in 2011 by Constellation
Records. The first song that really drew me in happens to be the first on the
album, titled “Changes”. The song evolves
from a guitar jam into a more electronic driven pulse. It never fails to
disappoint with an interesting array of instrumental choices that leaves the
listener wondering what’s going to happen next. The vocals are really mellow
and fit perfectly within the atmosphere of the track. The next song, “Love
& Light”, starts with a rhythmic feel through the use of sampling people breathing. The artificial sample sounds are heavily
contrasted with natural sounding drums and guitars to give this song a compelling
edge. I particularly liked the end of “Love & Light” where a guitar part
towards the back of the song comes into focus and is heavily washed over with a
delay effect. This helps to create tension and is a good lead into the next
song, “How Will I”. This song starts off with a great bassline but i thought it became a little
stagnant over time. The duration is at 7:53 so it’s not difficult to imagine why
(even though I am a fan of a well executed long song ). “Futureactive Kid
(Part1 & Part2)” are both great songs and deserve a listen, if not for the
bassoon solo only. “Wolfman” is clocked in at 10 mins but this time the length didn't me me enjoy the song less. I felt it was
nicely composed and has a nice feel to it. The lyrics are just as whacky as
on the rest of the album and they once again suit the song well. “Impossible
Spaces” is an album I know I’ll be listening to again and I heavily suggest
listening to “Changes” if you don’t have time for the whole album.
Track list:
1.) Changes
2.) Love & Light
3.) How Will I?
4.) Futureactive Kid (Part 1)
5.) Futureactive Kid (Part2)
6.) Wolfman
7.) Impossible Spaces
