Father John Misty's "Fear Fun"

Welcome back!~ Got a nice little album to share with you all today. Released in 2012, "Fear Fun" is the work of Joshua Tillman, formerly the drummer for Fleet Foxes. The album is beautifully crafted and it's hard to pinpoint exactly what genre it sits in; my best guess would be somewhere between folk / rock / country. I would suggest listening to some of these tunes on headphones with few distractions to really get the full flavor. The lyrical content is captivating and you can tell Tillman is an "artsy" musician. Many of the songs are pretty dark sounding until "I'm Writing a Novel" comes on; it is much more playful than the songs before it.

I will admit that on my first listen of "Fear Fun" I didn't think I'd play to it again. This is the type of album that grows on you after each and every listen. Certain songs reminded me of John Lennon and the work he produced. The lyrical content from Sally Hatchet specifically made me think of the Beatles lyrically, including this line : "Sally Hatchet lives in a hole in the ground / The longer it keeps raining the more she has to struggle to / maintain a wonderful time / Oh yeah" The end of the song is reminiscent of The Beatles' "A Day in the Life" when the orchestra comes in at the end to create tension. "Fear Fun" is an album that is really rewarding to listen to multiple times and you'll notice something new each time

  2. So you just put me up on something new I would have probably never listened to, I'm actually feeling it, think I'm becoming more open to some of the other genres.

  4. I love the Fleet Foxes, saw them at pitchfork a few years back. So far this sounds like the music I play when I drink coffee, do my homework, and just hang out around the apartment. It gives me a fantastic energy and is right down my alley for this new folky music coming out.

It's funny that you mentioned The Beatles because the second I saw the album cover all I could think of is. "this looks like a combination of Sargent Pepper, Revolver, and Yellow Submarine."
